Raphael Mechoulam, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and Natural Medicine
In 1964 he became the first person to isolate Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol and was successful in it's structure elucidation and total synthesis. He was also as successful with a number of others cannabinoids including cannabidiol and cannabigerol. Another one of his research projects led to the discovery of the first described endocannabinoid; Anandamide, which was then isolated and characterized by two of his postdoctoral researchers Lumír OndÅ™ej Hanuš and William Devane.
