Mieko Hester Perez / Joey Perez

Mieko, Joey's mom, founded the Unconventional Foundation for Autism (UF4A), which is dedicated to spreading the news that Cannabis is in fact the most effective treatment for autism. They are raising funds to assist families with special needs to gain access to Cannabis medicines.

Joey is now 11. At 16 months he was diagnosed with autism. For 9 years Mieko was forced to manage Joey's autism with a host of pharmaceutical drugs. At one point doctors had prescribed an astounding 13 different conventional prescription medications to treat the various symptoms of autism's spectrum of disorders, until his health began to deteriorate rapidly. Having tried every conceivable combination of pharmaceuticals, at all sorts of dosages, his doctors gave up and told Mieko that Joey had just 6 months to live.

They needed a miracle, and it came in the form of Cannabis. But as Mieko says, "It's not a miracle, it's science!"

Now 2 years on, medicinal Cannabis has helped to facilitate life for Joey. He is flourishing with new communicative expressions, he's happier, healthier, better behaved and is more productively active than ever before.
